Petros Pilavachi was born in Cairo Egypt to Greek parents. He studied at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) where he obtained a MSc in Chemical Engineering. He then undertook postgraduate studies in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College of the University of London and obtained an MSc, two DIC and a PhD. He was awarded the 1st prize (Rudolf Lessing Medal) for his PhD at Imperial College. He obtained scholarships for his studies at the NTUA and for his doctoral studies at Imperial College. He started his career at the multinational company Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), in Brussels. Then, he was appointed as a senior official at the European Commission – Directorate General for Research, for Non-Nuclear R&D Programs. Simultaneously, he was teaching energy economics at the Faculty of Engineering of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). During his long-standing career, he represented the European Commission in several missions in many Member States of the European Union, as well as the International Energy Agency (IEA), the USA and Russia. He was a Founding Member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Renewable Energy Sources in Athens, as the representative of the European Commission. He returned to Greece where he was elected Professor, first at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and then appointed at the University of Western Macedonia, wherefrom he was elected Professor Emeritus. He served as Deputy Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Western Macedonia, Director of the “Industrial Technology and Management, Energy Policy” Division and Founder and Director of the Laboratory “Energy Systems Management and Energy Policy”. He supervised PhDs in Greece and was a Member of various juries awarding PhDs in Greece, Great Britain, France, Belgium and Denmark. He is an Editorial Board Member of Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Progress as well as an Advisory Board Member of Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer Research. He was the main organizer or Member of the Scientific Committee of many Conferences. He received the Robert Schuman Medal (European Union), the yearly award 2004 from COGEN-Europe for a distinguished contribution in cogeneration in Europe and a Plaquette Honoris Causa from the University of Western Macedonia for his multilateral offer and excellent performance. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers of Great Britain, a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences and a Member of the Energy Committee of the Academy of Athens. He knows Greek, English, French, German and Arabic. |
